Classic 1950's House

I just listed, today, one of the nicest properties in Agassiz and thought that I would share some views of it.  As some people are attracted to classic cars I am drawn to building style and this property is a fine example of a vintage 1950s a smaller house design. Situated on a .6 acre lot with a frontage of 179' and a depth of 149' a large part of the parcel is dedicated to mature shrubs and towering trees. Let's take a walk around this property and you will see why I think it is so special.

The interior is just as nice with oak floors in 5 rooms and the hallway.  The pictures tell it all...

This property located at 1627 Vimy Road Agassiz is available for sale $395,000 if you know of someone that might be interested have them give me a call at Royal LePage Wheeler Cheam Realty.  The lot could be subdivided for a second house or a large garage could be built on it for storing away classic cars.

Picture of the Week - Salish Sea

Moonrise on the Salish Sea

On the 15th of July a large area of coastal water between Vancouver Island and the mainland was renamed the "Salish Sea" during a ceremony in Victoria which included First Nation and government leaders.  Friday, I had a chance to take this moonrise picture from one of our BC ferries and thought it and its new name - splendid.  It left me with a question though "Isn't it time we found a new name for "British Columbia"?  What do you think?

Picture of the Week - Shadow Play

Shadow Play - copyright (cc) Stephen Mullock 2010

The Harrison Festival of the Arts in beautiful Harrison Hot Springs BC has drawn my attention and attendance this past week.  Highlights for me included the high energy Friday night performance of El Puchero del Horteleno A BAND WORTH CHECKING OUT!!!  Do it now. David Lindley's Wednesday night performance showed us his virtuosity and genius but lacked songs I would consider crowd pleasers - like "Mercury Blues".

The Festival does provide a great venue for taking photographs here are some images that I am pleased with.

Mount McGuire and the Terrible Tamihi

Mount Cheam is legendary, Mount Slesse (Fang) is sinister but the saddest mountain of them all is Mount McGuire former known as Tamihi Mountain.

Vedder River view of Mount McGuire

Towering over the fertile plains of Chilliwack and the eastern Fraser Valley Mount McGuire reaches skyward to a lofty height of 6,620 feet, 2018 meters, (National Topographic Series Map of 1965). Named after an early Chilliwack River Valley pioneer this peak was formerly known as Tamihi Mountain and is still called this by many locals. Oliver N. Wells writes in "The Chilliwacks and their Neighbors" of its' uniquely cheerless function:

In ancient times, according to legend, it was to this mountain that the deformed or misfits in communal life were taken by their guardians.  Here on Tamihi they were left to fend for themselves, and there was little chance of survival. T' ehmeehiy in the Chilliwack language means "the place of the deformed."

The Chilliwack River Valley while abundant with salmon and wildlife is often cold and damp in the fall and winter months and I can not help but imagine the agony of this desertion.

Growing up in the Sardis community of Chilliwack my mother would often call this mountain the "Sleeping Indian".

The Sleeping Indian indeed,.... rest in peace.

Mount McGuire and Chilliwack Barn

One of my goals in writing for this blog was to get better acquainted with the mountains that surround the beautiful Chilliwack - Fraser Cheam region like a necklace.

Mount Cheam has been previously written about in three posts, Mount Cheam Local Legend, Cheam and the Great Ice Giant and Mount Cheam the View from the Top.  The Mount Cheam legend in a slightly different version is also available in audio at the "A Journey Into Time Immemorial" site (click here).

Mount Slesse known as "Fang" was the subject of the picture of the week earlier this year its sinister past well deserved.

There are plenty of good views of Mount McGuire (Tamihi) peak especially along the Chilliwack - Vedder Rivers.

Picture of the Week - Harrison Festival of the Arts, The Beach Scene

Harrison Lake Beach on Festival Day
This panorama picture was taken yesterday at Harrison Lake lots of room on the beach, craft merchants and artists busy along the sidewalk and Mount Cheam peeping up in the far right of the photograph.

My wife, friends and I took in some of the free entertainment on the beach enjoying the Roots music and bluegrass of "Shearwater" and the vocal quintet Chic Gamine. What a great sound.  Under the shade of an old willow tree their sweet voices lifted up high to a blue sky. For a moment all was right in the world.

The Harrison Festival of the Arts is just starting but be sure and make your plans today the rumour on the beach was that some of the evening shows were filling up fast.  Click here for program guide.

Harrison Festival of the Arts

The good weather is here and the Harrison Festival of the Arts is about to get underway. Can life get any better? Harrison Hot Springs is celebrating the 32nd Harrison Festival (hell, they're having a party) for 8 glorious days at the Harrison Lake beach between July 10 - 18, 2010 and I, for one, cannot remember a better line-up of talent especially in the "Evenings In the Hall".  My plans include David Lindley, but, I am also looking hard at Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks as well as El Puchero del Horteleno. There is a deep well of talent coming here this year and something for everyone; for a complete listing of shows click here.

A Children's Day is held on the Wednesday, that being July 14, 2010, our kids always really liked the special attention organizers gave this day - it's fun.  What are you going to do with the kids anyways?  If the weather stays hot pack a bathing suit and take a refreshing swim in Harrison Lake...

As luck would have it Agassiz got a preview today with some of our local talent performing this afternoon at the Oasis Coffee Shop and latter at the Farmer's Market (held every Thursday in Pioneer Park).  A friend of mine Marilee Jones with Sheila Allan and Laura Madsen will be adding background music during the Literary cafe.  Today was bit of a warm up.  Well done ladies.

Pictures of the Week - Chilliwack Vintage Car Show

I had never attended a Vintage Car Rally until this past Sunday in downtown Chilliwack BC but that was enough to make me want to return.  It proves once more that you never know what you will find on the streets of our eastern Fraser Valley communities.

As an aside, there will be a Vintage car Show at the Kilby Museum, Harrison Mills BC July 10th 2010 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.  Against the backdrop of the heritage buildings there these Classic Cars will look great. Plan to attend.

Back to the Chilliwack streets, clearly evident by their care is a love that transcends their practical function of transportation. One exhibitor, Joe Morris, bought his Classic 40 years ago back when he was only 20 years old.  I wish I could tell you the year and make but as already admitted I am not a car buff.  If you know send me an email.

Joe Morris Classic
I do remember the Mullock family's first vehicles a blue 2 tone Pontiac that 4 kids and our parents would pile into for trips to the drive-in or a sandy Ontario beach, At 4 years of age that was "the best car in the world" and the day I learned that it had been taken as a "trade in" for a wide winged 1959 Chevrolet Biscayne I recall my deep sense of loss.  It's a feeling I like to remember as I work with families selling their homes; that a personal attachment can make a car or house mean more than mere transportation or shelter.

Here are some pictures where I have used some more artistic expression, I hope that you like them.
